Andy Murray says that his gruelling training regime is major reason behind his new found ability of controlling his temper on court.

I’ve always wanted to improve my anger management. I’ve worked on it but also the physical side of my training has made a huge difference.

I find playing matches much easier as all my work off the court is harder, and angry moments come out in the gym and on the track rather than on court. That's made a huge difference.

I don’t see myself moving abroad.

I like to spend most of my time here around friends and family. I spend December training in Miami and a few weeks there during the year but, apart from that, I don’t see myself going anywhere.


Murray talks about his fan mailI get lots of fan mail. Much of it is from older people — 65 and 70-year-olds — and it’s surprising that so many grannies and grandads should write to me saying how great it’s been to watch me.

But the strangest thing was some funny stuff in China, where Chinese fans made a jigsaw puzzle of my face which I had to make up.

There were about 15-20 pieces and a long letter on the back, which I didn’t understand. Luckily there has been no unsporting mail, although my friends say people still ask them about the England-Scotland thing.


Murray nominated for BBC Sports Personality of the YearAndy Murray has made the shortlist for the 2008 BBC Sports Personality of the Year. Murray will have a hard time winning the award with team GB's hugely successful Olympic year and Lewis Hamilton's Formula One world title.

Murray to beef up in off-season

Andy Murray has said that he wants to put on 6 pounds of weight before the start of the 2009 season and also says there are no areas of his game that need major improvement.

If I'm going to put on six pounds or so I'll have to eat loads, because I'm training for five hours a day. I'll be eating sushi, drinking protein drinks, eating those bars you have after a match. Mind you, my gran is cooking Christmas lunch, so I don't think that will be sushi.

The weight training I don't find so tough. It's more the running that gets to me. It's so tough, and you are pushing yourself on every session, but you get the rewards once you are back on court.

I don't think there is anything huge in my game to improve for next year, though I would like to be physically stronger than I have been this year. I'd like my recovery after a long match to be better. My game is there, it is just a question of doing it consistently through the two weeks of a slam.

Further comments from MurrayAndy talks about his time off,

Right now I'm quite enjoying doing not very much," Murray said. "I had a hit a couple of days ago, but after half an hour I just couldn't be bothered any more. For fitness, I'll be doing similar stuff over the winter to what I was doing last year, but I'm starting from a better base, so I'll be running faster and lifting heavier weights.
And his thoughts on his opponents for next year,

I'm sure that Federer will be desperate to get back to the No-1 spot, and he's still playing great and doesn't have a whole lot of points to defend in the early part of the year.

Nadal has really pushed out on his backhand, and added a few things to his game, and [Novak] Djokovic is as solid as he ever was. So it's going to be interesting to see how everyone improves.

Murray crashes out to Davydenko

Andy Murray today crashed out of the Tennis Master's Cup after a straights set defeat to Russia's Nikolay Davydenko, 7-5, 6-2.

It was clear from the off that the Scot was feeling the after effects of his epic match with Roger Federer less than 24 hours earlier. The Russian broke immediately and signs were ominous. However, Murray immediately broke back and the match went with serve until Davydenko broke at 5-5, before serving out to take the set 7-5.

The second set was more comprehensive for the Russian. He was striking the ball beautfully, taking it early and keeping Murray pegged behind the baseline. The tired Scot had no answer to the Russian's relentless strokes and eventually lost the set 6-2. And with that went Murray's dream of lifting the Tennis Master's Cup for 2008.

In the circumstances, naturally I was going to be tired. I did the best that I could with what I had. I just felt a little bit tired.

He's a tough guy to play against if you're not feeling like you can chase every ball down.

Murray takes out Federer at Shanghai

Andy Murray has beaten Roger Federer in his final group match of the Masters Cup in Shanghai, 4-6 7-6 7-5.

Although already assured of his place in the semi-finals, Murray played the match as though his life hung in the balance. In an entertaining first set, Federer broke Murray in the fourth game to take the opener 6-4.

However, Federer immediately allowed Murray to break at the start of the second set. The Scot later gained a 5-2 lead before suffering a major slump. After Federer battled back to 5-5, Murray managed to clinch the set 7-6 (7-3) due to some inspired play in the tiebreak.

The third set was a see-saw affair, as Murray raced into a 3-0 lead before losing four consecutive games. He immediately broke back and held to lead 5-4. Murray blew seven match points in the 10th game, as he tried to wrap up the match on Federer's serve, before eventually breaking the Swiss' resistance two games later.

Murray will now take on Nikolay Davdyenko in the semi-finals on Saturday.

Andy Murray has booked his place in the semi-finals of the Masters Cup at Shanghai after defeating Gilles Simon, 6-4 6-2.

The Scot quickly gained a 4-0 lead over the Frenchman in the opening set but later made a number of unforced errors that allowed Simon to fight back into the set. However, Murray still managed to take it 6-4.

In the second set Murray regained control over his opponent to comfortably take the victory and confirm his place in the semi-finals.

Today's match was tough. I knew I had to win this match and I'm just glad to come through.
Murray will next play Roger Federer but as the Scot has already beaten Andy Roddick, the result will not have any effect on his progress.

Murray projected to win six Slam titles

Andy Murray will win at least six Grand Slams in his career, according to the world's leading Tennis magazine.

Tom Perrotta of Tennis.com also projected four more majors for Novak Djokovic and predicts Rafael Nadal will finish his career with ten.

Murray’s play this year, especially late in the year, caused me to write this column. Nadal, Federer, Djokovic, and Murray are, to my mind, among the strongest foursomes in the history of the game. Tennis fans have praised Federer’s versatility for years. Murray doesn’t have the same grace or the same caliber forehand. He does, however, have a stronger return of serve, a more reliable backhand, a first serve with more sting, and softer hands at net.

The 21-year-old Scot is that good—certainly good enough to win multiple majors. Will he remain healthy enough? Projected career total: 6

In other news: Murray confirmed for 2009 pre-season tournamentAndy Murray will start 2009 by competing against the six best players in the world at the the Capitala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi.

Confirmed entries for the elite pre-season tournament are world number one Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer (No. 2), Andy Murray (No. 4), Nikolay Davydenko (No. 5), Andy Roddick (No. 6) and James Blake (No. 10).

The January 1-3 tournament will be held at the 5,000-seater Abu Dhabi International Tennis Complex at Zayed Sports City.

Andy Murray made the perfect start to his first ever Masters Cup by defeating Andy Roddick, 6-4 1-6 6-1.

The Scot initially appeared on top form and thanks to his superb serving easily took the first set without facing a single break point.

In the second set, Murray's level dipped and he suffered a major slump, at one point double faulting twice in one game.

However, Murray came out fighting in the third set and although the Scot seemed visibly tired, he managed to take the set 6-1 to seal the victory.

After the match Murray was asked how he was feeling,

Not great. He made it difficult and made me do a lot of running.

It's tough to get over the jet lag. I've been going to bed at this time and hopefully I'll be better for the next match.

Andy Murray has been drawn in the red group for the Masters Cup in Shanghai and therefore will face Roger Federer, Andy Roddick and Gilles Simon.

To be among the top eight players in the world is a great feeling.

It's my first time in Shanghai, but I have heard from all the other players that it is a fantastic tournament

Murray makes his maiden appearance in Shanghai after an incredible second half of the year on tour which saw him reach the finals of the US Open.

Murray needs to improve on clay and grass

Andy Murray has admitted that he must improve on clay and grass surfaces to consistenctly compete with the likes of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

If I want to compete with them for the whole year I need to improve on clay and grass.

They're much better tennis players than me on those surfaces.

On his chances at Shanghai,

I want to try and keep my form going - I've played really well of late. Whether or not I can win the whole thing is a different story but it will be a really good experience and maybe I can win the tournament, I don't know.

Normally on the tour it's a straight knockout and you have to win three or four rounds before you play against the Federers, Nadals and Djokovics. Here, if you want to win it you've got to win at least four out of five matches against those guys and you have to be very switched on right from the start.

I'm not used to it - it's going to be a new experience for a lot of the guys and I have to play some of my best tennis to win some matches.

Murray's run ends at the hands of Nalbandian

Andy Murray's remarkable run has come to an end at the hands of Argentina's David Nalbandian, who came through 7-6, 6-3 in an entertaining match.

The match was, in effect, decided by two factors: The Scot's lack of first serves and Nalbandian's pin point returning.BBC Interview

Murray was broken early, his first serve percentage dropping to 22% at one point. However, he managed to break back immediately and eventually a tiebreak was forced. Nalbandian quickly raced to a 6-2 lead, before finally closing out the tiebreak 7-3.

If the first set was filled high quality tennis, the second set was out of this world. Nalbandian was red-lining and seemed unstoppable. It is to Murray's credit that he hung in there with some sparkling tennis of his own. The Argentine, however, was more secure on serve and broke twice to go up 5-2. Not willing to surrender his streak lightly, Murray broke back to delay what seemed inevitable. The Scot was unable to hold onto his serve, as Nalbandian applied all sorts of pressure to break and clinch the match.

Murray's commentsIt was obviously a shame that I lost, but at least it wasn't a bad performance or against a player I was really expecting to beat [easily].

It was a tough match today but he played really well.

The one thing I didn't do, that I have done well in the last few weeks, is to serve well. The [first serve] percentage wasn't as high as it has been.


The British number 1 will hope to regroup and start his preparations for Shanghai.

Murray through to quarter-finals

Andy Murray's long run of form continued today as he reached the quarter-finals of the Paris Masters with a 6-3 7-6 win over Fernando Verdasco.

The Scot broke in the eighth game of the first set when Verdasco completely lost control at 40-0 up, making five unforced errors in a row.

Both players managed to hold serve in the second set taking it to tie-break which Murray won after fighting back from 4-1 down.

Murray sails past Querrey

Murray produced yet another solid performance in his second round match at the Paris Masters defeating Querrey 6-2, 6-4. Murray had got the better of the big serving American on his previous two encounters and this evening was no different, despite being on Querrey's best surface.

Andy seemed to have a problem with his string tension early on and went down an early break in the second game of the match. However, Murray changed his raquet and reeled of six straight games, including an incredible shot in which Andy hit a winner with his back to the net, and took the first set 6-2.

Both players held serve until 2-2 in the second set where Murray accelerated ahead and broke the American easily to go 3-2 up. Querrey did manage to pull the set back on serve at 4-4, but he was simply delaying the inevitable as Andy broke straight back and then served out the match 6-4.

Murray spoke to Sky Sports following the match and seems to be enjoying his run of form.

Murray's comments
I definately enjoyed that one. Against him, you can get some easy games cause he's not not best returner but as you saw towards the end of the match he can put some pressure on you. But I was pleased with the performance.

The courts are a lot faster than St. Petersburg and I didn't get a lot of practice on centre court, only about 20 minutes yesterday. The practice courts are off site which is strange and makes them quite different to play. But I got raquet stringed during match so it was fine.

I practiced with Nadal yesterday and he was hitting the ball really well. All three of the top players are playing well so it's gonna be difficult.

Against Verdasco, I'm gonna need to try stay focused. He's one of those guys if he plays his best he's a tough guy to beat. But I've got a good record against him in past. I played well against him last week so quite confident.

Davis Cup returns to Glasgow

The Davis Cup will return to Glasgow's Braehead Arena when it hosts Great Britiain's Davis Cup tie against Ukraine from 6-8th March 2009.

The tie is a Euro-Africa Zone Group One quarter-final tie with the winner going on to compete in the World Group Play-offs in September and the losing nation playing in July to remain in Group One.

Capain John Lloyd said: Home Davis Cup ties are a fantastic opportunity to get behind the team and we will be looking for plenty of support when we take on Ukraine next year. We last played them in 2006 in Odessa which was my first tie as Captain. It was a tough tie and we will certainly not be underestimating them - the support of a passionate crowd in Scotland could well make all the difference.

Magic Murray makes it eight

Andy Murray won his eighth career title with a straightforward victory over Andrey Golubev in St Petersburg. Murray defeated the qualifier from Kazakhstan 6-1, 6-1 to defend his title.

The outcome of the match was never really in doubt with Andy showing all the quality he has displayed over the past few months from the opening. There was the possibility that playing his tenth match in just under a fortnight the Scot may have been caught off guard by the youngster. However, following a hold of serve from both men, Murray broke for a 3-1 lead and never looked back. The opening set was sealed 6-1 with Golobev failing to capitalise on a single break point.

The second set followed the same pattern as the first, with Murray breaking both his opponents serve and his spirit in the third game. Despite facing further breakpoints, Murray sealed the match with another break of serve of his own, closing out in less than an hour.

The victory marks Murray's 23rd in his last 25 matches and secures his fifth title of the season. He now travels to Paris where he hopes to become the first man to win three Masters titles in a row.

Murray destroys Verdasco

Andy Murray has progressed through to the final of the St Petersburg Open after demolishing Spain's Fernando Verdasco 6-0, 6-3.

In truth, Murray had no cause to get out of second gear today, save for the occasional moment of magic. Verdasco made a poor start to the match, tossing in four double faults in his first two service games and practically handing the Scot two immediate service breaks. From that point on, a bagel always seemed to be on the cards. Murray comfortably held serve throughout and broke once more to take the opener 6-0.

The Spaniard continued where he left off and made another wobbly start to the second set. He was broken once more and a rare double bagel appeared to be a distinct possibility. However, the British Number 1 threw in a loose service game while serving at 2-0. Thereafter, the match went with serve until Verdasco was broken once again while serving at 3-4. All that was left for the Scot was to hold serve. He duly obliged and progresed through to his second successive St Petersburg Open final.
